AUK Celebrates New Story Booklet with World Book Day Competition

27th February 2017

Thursday 2nd March is World Book Day!

What is World Book Day I hear you cry! According to the World Book Day website it's 'a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it's a celebration of reading. In fact, it's the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

To celebrate World Book Day 2017, Alopecia UK is offering 50 free copies of its new children's story booklet, Ben's First Day, to children via a social media competition.

What is the competition?

We are wanting children to send us their World Book Day photos. Perhaps this could be a photo of themselves dressed as their favourite literary character? (Some schools have World Book Day fancy dress days). Or perhaps simply a photo taken reading their favourite story or new book?

For the first 50 World Book Day photos received by 5pm on Friday 3rd March, Alopecia UK will send each child a complimentary copy of 'Ben's First Day'. The 50 winning photos will be included in a photo album to feature on Alopecia UK's public Facebook page and Flickr account

Any photos sent to us after 5pm on Friday 3rd March will not be considered for the competition.

How can my child enter the competition?

If your child wishes to enter, please send their photo to Please include your child's full name, address (including postcode) and details of any literary character they might be dressed as (if applicable).

By entering your child into this competition you agree to Alopecia UK including their first name and photo on the charity's social media.

Please note, if a photo is particularly dark or lacking in definition/focus, we reserve the right to exclude it from the competition.

What if my child is unsuccessful in winning a free copy?

If your child is not one of the first 50 photos received, you can still purchase your copy of 'Ben's First Day' from Alopecia UK's eBay store

Is the competition open only to children with alopecia?

No, any child is able to enter regardless of whether they have alopecia. The story raises awareness of alopecia but also has a more general message; that we're not all the same and this is absolutely fine!

Are there other ways to get involved in World Book Day?

There are plenty of ideas and suggestions on World Book Day's website

In addition, one of our ambassadors, Sue Hampton, is an author. You might wish to take a look at her books, available from both her website and Amazon. Sue has written books for both children and adults, including two stories featuring alopecia; The Waterhouse Girl and its sequel, Crazy Daise.

There are also other books that may be of interest to those with alopecia. We have listed some here
