Becky Matthews is taking part in the Great Bristol Half Marathon later in the year. We had a chat with her about her fundraising challenge.
"I discovered Alopecia UK during this time of being thrown into a world of decisions about wigs versus headwear and how to draw eyebrows! Alopecia UK have been an amazing source of information and support at what was a very lonely and confusing time. I have been very fortunate to attend a local Alopecia UK support group, which is run by volunteers. As a result, I met others going through the same thing. Alopecia UK does amazing work and I want to raise money to give something back!
I want to contribute to the invaluable work the charity does to raise awareness of alopecia by pledging to run the Bristol Half Marathon bald! This is a terrifying thought for me as my hair loss is still very raw but I feel so passionate about raising awareness for adults and children, in order that one day we won't feel so different! Wigs are fantastic for blending into society but I'd love to think that there would be a day in the future where I (and others in the same boat) could enjoy the freedom of going about our daily activities bald without any prejudice or misunderstandings.
I’ve always been inspired by other fundraisers on Alopecia UK’s website, which has helped me enormously on my journey, so I’d be delighted to help others not to feel so alone.
I am very much a novice runner so the Bristol Half is a big challenge for me! But, I'm determined to turn my misfortune into a positive...I'm running for Alopecia UK and the stigmas that go with being different and not quite fitting in.”
Thank you Becky for sharing your story with us and for putting on your running shoes for Alopecia UK this September. As September is Alopecia Awareness Month, there could be no better time for you to be doing your run!
