I visited one of the replacement salons today who, amazingly, have opened a salon where I live in Newcastle. After learning exactly what is involved, and how often the maintenance (tightening) of this system has to take place I'm glad there is one local to me. It's not so much the cost but if I went ahead with this I wouldn't be able to spare the time to take a full day, or two, away (I run my own business so it just wouldn't be feasible). I have FFA and am still undergoing treatment. I'm back at the hospital in January so won't be going ahead with this system at the moment...will speak to my consultant as I'm a bit concerned whether or not the treatment I'm getting (sterioid injections) will be compromised and I doubt I will be able to apply Minoxidil to my scalp through the mesh. Although I've lost some hair at the front I've lost quite a bit at the sides and around my ears. However, the style I have covers the sides pretty well, it's just the fringe which has thinned dramatically (in my opinion) that I'm more concerned about. The salon said they could just design me a front piece for my fringe as I didn't like the idea of the mesh going right over to the back of my head just so they could put some hair at the sides. I also have a great hairdresser and get my hair highlighted and the roots touched up every 5-6 weeks (I've had a grey streak running across the top of my head since I was in my early 30s!). The thought of losing my hairdresser (who has tamed my wild curly hair into a straight graduated bob) fills me with complete dread. The hair replacement salon said that while I could still use my hairdresser they wouldn't guarantee the hairpiece if I went elsewhere for cutting and colouring.
I think they're a brilliant system...saw a lady who had lost most of her hair across the top of her head and the difference was amazing. For me, at this point in time, I think I may look into getting a few very fine extensions put into my hair. My hairdresser has a lady working for her who specialises in applying extensions and she can put them in very, very fine and as I'm there every 5-6 weeks anyway, any maintenance could be done during my normal visit. If my hairline recedes more then the hair replacement system may be something I have to revisit.
